How T-Lab Japan Beloved Wooden Animals are Made

Every child loves wooden toys, and is fascinated by animals and small creatures.

With that in mind, T-Lab Japan has created a range of adorable “Pole Pole” wooden animals from around the world. From arctic polar bears to rainforest sloths, each and every one will captivate children and adults alike.

Pole Pole means “slowly” in Swahili, and that’s the ethos behind the meticulous work done by T-Lab’s skilled artisans from a fair trade community in Bali, Indonesia.

The wooden animals are made from the wood of Albizia Falcata which is one of the quickest growing trees in East Asia. In only four years the trees rapidly mature and start producing seeds. T-Lab is committed to replanting every tree used in its production process.

First, animal shapes are hand drawn in large pieces of untreated wood and individually cut out.

Then expert artisans meticulously carve one by one making sure to fine tune every detail such as ears, tails and legs. They are able to achieve an almost identical result from one animal to another!

The next step, sanding and polishing, is repeated several times until a perfectly smooth finish is obtained.

Once the animals are hand polished, their most notable features are finely hand painted with eco-friendly black paint.

Each piece is unique, a wooden toy to treasure and keep.
